Getting around
People are often surprised at how compact Manchester is, and how easy it is to explore the city centre by foot. There are also excellent public transport links, including an extensive network of buses and trams and trains and a free Metroshuttle bus, which covers three circular routes in the city centre. If you insist on taxis, choose Eco Cars Manchester, the first environmentally friendly taxi firm in the area using hybrid vehicles which run partly on electricity. Call 0161 998 7777 to book.
-
Manchester Markets
Find the best bargains at the city’s many markets, where friendly advice and a personal service are always a given.
-
Where to eat and drink
Choose a restaurant that cooks with seasonal, local produce and savour home-grown flavours whilst contributing to the local economy – try Isinglass restaurant in Urmston, which has been awarded a Silver with the GTBS (0161 749 8400). Sample real ales brewed in the Northwest at Manchester’s pubs.

The Manchester United Museum and Tour
Old Trafford has received the GTBS Silver Award for its efforts in energy efficiency and sustainability. Actions include using recycled trainers to create rubber flooring in the stadium, stocking organic and fair trade options in the museum’s café, and the players have committed to undertake three hours of positive community activities per week.

The Manchester Museum
This popular visitor attraction has been awarded GTBS Silver for it’s commitment to sustainability.
The Green Tourism Business Scheme is the leading sustainable tourism certification scheme in the UK. Businesses that meet the required standard, receive a Bronze, Silver, or Gold award based on their level of achievement.

- Use water wisely by turning off the tap when you clean your teeth, taking showers rather than baths, and adhering to towel policies in hotels.
- Conserve energy by switching off lights that aren’t required and closing windows if the heating is on.
- Reduce, recycle and reuse by avoiding overly packaged goods and limiting the number of plastic carrier bags you accept. Recycle wherever you can.
