  • Getting around

People are often surprised at how compact Manchester is, and how easy it is to explore the city centre by foot. There are also excellent public transport links, including an extensive network of buses and trams and trains and a free Metroshuttle bus, which covers three circular routes in the city centre. If you insist on taxis, choose Eco Cars Manchester, the first environmentally friendly taxi firm in the area using hybrid vehicles which run partly on electricity. Call 0161 998 7777 to book.

Responsible Traveller

Visitors can have a significant impact of the environment and to minimise this impact we would ask that you:

    • Use public transport to get to and around the destination wherever possible.  We have good train links to Manchester from around the UK, and a good public transport system to get around Manchester and its surrounding areas, including the tram network.
    • Support Green Tourism Businesses by staying in accommodation and visiting attractions with green credentials wherever possible.  Businesses who have signed up to the Green Business Tourism Scheme are listed on these pages
    • Support local producers by buying locally crafted goods when you go out shopping.  There is a great range of local food and arts and crafts available.  These can be found at www.visitmanchester.com.
    • Use water wisely by turning off the tap when you clean your teeth, taking showers rather than baths, and adhering to towel policies in hotels.
    • Conserve energy by switching off lights that aren’t required and closing windows if the heating is on.
    • Reduce, recycle and reuse by avoiding overly packaged goods and limiting the number of plastic carrier bags you accept.  Recycle wherever you can.
